The standard powertrain for the Kia Sportage model is a 2.5-liter I4 engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It has a power output of 187 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, lower than the hybrid variant. The Kia Sportage Hybrid is equipped with a turbocharged 1.6-liter I4 engine, a 44-kW electric motor and a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion battery. These combine to deliver up to 226 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The power is transmitted by a six-speed automatic transmission to the front or all wheels, depending on the drivetrain.

The Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid has a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine but is paired with a more powerful electric motor of 66.9 kW and a lithium-ion battery of 13.8-kWh. It is linked to a five-speed automatic transmission and a clutch that the driver can use to disengage the gasoline engine for electric power.
Design
The newest Kia Sportage is bigger than the outgoing model by 7.1 inches from bumper to bumper. The new wheelbase is 108.5 inches because of the extra 3.4 inches between the axles.
